Residents of Wales who would like to learn to hedgelay may be eligible for an 80% grant towards the course through Farming Connect.
Farming Connect is a Welsh Government-funded programme aimed at supporting farmers and growers to develop profitable, sustainable farm businesses. There are also other categories which the grant funding covers, including contractors and new entrants.

Why Train with the National Hedgelaying Society?
The NHLS is the UK’s recognised organisation for promoting and preserving the traditional craft of hedgelaying.
Training in Wales is delivered by experienced Welsh hedgelayers with extensive knowledge of traditional Welsh hedgelaying styles and local hedge management practices.
Welsh Novice Training
The training is delivered over three days, with an assessment on the fourth day, which can lead to a Lantra accredited novice level certificate.
The training can be delivered over consecutive days, or split over a few weeks, to allow candidates to have some practice between training days.
If you have suitable hedges on your own land, our trainers can come to you, subject to a minimum of three candidates.
What will you learn?
Candidates will be lead through an initial assessment of the hedge, it’s preparing for laying and then practical training, using hand tools, to create a living boundary which will continue to flourish for many decades or indeed centuries, if rejuvenated on a regular cycle. The novice course also includes safety aspects and recording a formal risk assessment.
