Devon Rural Skills Trust – Hedgelaying Training Course

Hedge laying (traditionallly called 'steeping' in Devon) is the traditional way of managing hedgerows. Using billhook, axe and saw, the stems are partially severed and bent over to form a living fence. There are many different styles of hedgelaying, the Devon way is to create a low and thick hedge along the top of a large bank. This course is suitable for budding hedgers of all skill levels or none.

Hedgelaying Training The Greensand Trust

A weekend hedge laying training course giving you the chance to lay a South of England style hedge on the Saturday and on Sunday to complete that as necessary and have a go at the underrated but increasingly common Crop and Pleach style using live stakes. We are working at a nature reserve where the Greensand Trust planted 2.5 kilometres of hedge now becoming ready to lay and ideal for beginners to learn on.

Your tutor Paul Blissett has been laying hedges for over 35 years and teaching hedge laying for 25 years. There will be at least two other experienced hedge layers on hand to assist him.
